Church manipulation is something I've always been aware of and although I always prefer to avoid atheist publications this is the most simple I have seen. I'm not wishing to test anyone's faith (please don't read it or stop reading if it harms you) just to understand some of those Holy Spirit moments that often occur before the money collection are timed perfectly and how the worship team and the sound system and even the lighting are often used to increase income by increasing peoples "feeling experience".
A friend of mine was one of the best sound guys to manipulate the congregation - he could bring the "Holy Spirit" feeling exactly on time by working with the worship team to get the congregation into the state of acceptance that the sound was leading them... then the pace and volume alone meant he chose the moment (obviously always aware that people needed to catch the bus at 12.30pm) The penny dropped that he was fooling people so he left the church because they would'nt stop the manipulation for financial reasons

Manipulation is fine when the manipulated ones know that its happening. If the church opened their doors and windows and used a big fan to blow wind through the church to then claim its the Holy Spirit's visitation blowing through it would appear to some to be a bit dishonest.
A sound guy making God appear at set times may be also appear to be dishonest to some

Ivor, the sound guy you mentioned, was he asked to do what he did ? ( I am curious to know whether the leaders/ pastor wanted to manipulate )
I believe there is subtle manipulation in just handing the plate around for collection - it instantly makes you feel obligated and if you pass it by, you know everyone will witness you not wanting to give. I have thankfully been in churches that do not have a collection come round - it's just in the church and left for the discretion of those who come and worship.
I use to go to Spring harvest and on my third year I started to see the manipulation - more with buying books and giving. I remember hearing , what I thought was a spirit led inspirational talk - then I over heard a fellow listener relay that he had heard this ' talk ' before. Then the book prompts would come, and you would feel an emotional pull to go and buy the book because you wanted to hear more.
I then started to realise just how much promotion of books, music, ect ect there was during the so called ' spirit led ' meetings. I started to notice it within ministries as well - but for years it never occurred to me !!

Our church never had a collection. There were offering boxes on the window ledges or you could give any other way that was convenient or not give at all it was not compulsory. No-one was fooled or manipulated and our leaders didn't like the worship group to 'stir up' the people but wanted it all to be from the heart. But not all churches are like that.

That sounds like a good way to do things Poppy. that way the leaders are in truth dependant on the Lord to prompt the people making them dependant on God himself.

Two boxes helps with discretion, if people are gathered near one then the other can be used.

michaelsherlockauthor.wordpress.com/2015/02/26/the-church-hypnotic-manipulation-sunday-morning-hypnosis/ I became aware of this when I was a teenager. There are many churches that do that. I've been to churches like that. I've seen videos where this kind of thing happens and it seems that it's been increasing over the last twenty years. There are even people who infiltrate churches to do this among other things that I won't go into. I'll just say that we should never let our guard down, even in a church. I guess I need to explain further by what I meant about not letting our guard down. I was referring to spiritual armor and we are told in scripture to be alert and vigilant and to test the spirits. Christians are and have been targeted by certain people because they really despise Christianity. They enjoy disrupting, desecrating Christian churches and subtly introducing their pagan beliefs, and even witchcraft into teachings in Christian churches and influencing Christians. Their goal is to turn Christians against the true teachings, the gospel, the scriptures, against God and to destroy their faith and worship of the one true God and to place themselves into positions of power in the church including bringing down a minister and replacing him with one of their own. I'm not saying this happens in all churches but it has happened in many of them and continues to happen. That's why I said that we have to be on guard. Because that's what these people are doing and we need to be aware of that and be vigilant and on guard against it.

I see why he's an atheist and 'FREE thinker' and that was to much 'free' thinking for me.
I only read it because his name sounded like a T V prosperity preacher who seems to have disappeared from the circuit, fortunately we have the gift of discerning of spirits and the witness of our spirit, when reading or listening to stuff, 'My sheep hear My voice and another, they will not follow' Thanks for caring for the flock heartsong.
